Mumbai: In a major decision, the Maharashtra government has issued a new circular under the Shops and Establishments Act allowing shops, malls, restaurants, theatres, and other business establishments to remain open 24 hours, seven days a week.

However, certain categories including liquor shops, bars, and hookah parlours will not be allowed to operate round-the-clock. The government clarified that every worker must be given at least 24 hours of rest per week, and labour laws must be strictly followed.

Business associations and entrepreneurs have welcomed this decision, saying it will boost the state’s economy, generate employment opportunities, and encourage investments. Youth and working professionals also see this as a positive step towards creating a vibrant nightlife in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur.

Women’s groups have noted that increased night-time activity could make public spaces feel safer. However, concerns remain regarding proper enforcement, policing, and safety arrangements.

Opposition leaders, including Aaditya Thackeray, pointed out that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is now implementing the same policy it once criticized on cultural and safety grounds.

With this move, Maharashtra joins global cities that operate 24/7, aiming to strengthen its late-night economy while balancing business growth and public safety.
